Servicing

Is it time for you annual gear service?

Scuba diving is an equipment intensive sport and when we dive our health and our lives depend on its good condition.  Every time you dive into the sea, your scuba gear is exposed to a variety of salts and minerals. Manual cleaning can only remove so much of the residue and some of it tends to get into inflators, hose connectors and regulators. Taking care of your equipment is important, the better you take care of it the longer it will last and the increased performance you will receive, as well as preventing the warranty from lapsing.

Make your regs like new

Your regulator is the control centre of your diving gear. Having your first stage, second stage and octopus units services once a year means that you can always count on the reg being ready to go and in proper working order.

At PRO DIVE we service each regulator as if it were our own. We pride ourselves on not taking short cuts. Your unit is taken apart into its component parts. All the parts are then cleaned, inspected and replaced if necessary. The reg is then reassembled, tested and then adjusted to peak efficiency.

BCD

We have removed 4 tablespoons of salt from one BC, some of the crystals were 2cm wide. Salt crystals will abrade your B.C bladder, hoses, O-rings and valves, irreversibly damaging this vital piece of gear.

Cylinder

Australian regulations require that your cylinder be visually inspected and pressure tested at a certified testing station once a year.

Computers

For most makes of dive computers we are able to change the battery and pressure test the unit.

Salt Water and Dive Equipment

Proper cleaning and care can extend the life of your equipment for many years. The following tips are provided for divers who are not familiar with the corrosive effect of salt water.

1. Always place your regulator in the tank first so that will have time to soak while you complete the remainder of the cleaning task.

2. Mask, fins and snorkel can be easily rinsed and placed out of the sun to dry.

3. Skins, wetsuits, booties and soft weightbelts should be hosed off, soaked and rinsed again to avoid having the salt eat the threads away.

4. Your BCD should be rinsed, soaked and rinsed again. Pay special attention to the area behind the tank strap and cummerbund. Use a hose to partially fill with water and blow air into it. Shake the water around until it reaches every corner of the bladder. Do this at least twice, then taste the water from the bladder to be sure the salt is out. Any salt that remains inside dries, crystallizes and will cut the bladder like glass.

5. As for your regulator, try to avoid the water hose altogether. Water pressure has a habit of forcing salt and sand into places where the sun never shines and can cause hidden problems. After soaking for an extended period of time, use your hand to clean the first and second stage as well as the hoses and gauges. Swish the regulator around to further dissolve any salt residue. Also remember to never depress the exhaust button on the second stage while immersed in water, as this will allow water into the hose and up into the first stage.

6. Allow your gear to dry completely before packing it away.

7. Finally, have your gear serviced annually no matter how well you clean it and regardless of how much you dive.
